How To Drive Safely In Mallorca

If you are going to be driving in Mallorca, you will need to prepare the following. According to the law in Spain, drivers need to have the following documentation in their vehicle before they drive.

  • Carnet de Conducir – your driving licence
  • Permiso de Circulación – your car registration documents, such as a rental or hire car agreement.
  • Documents relating to your insurance policy
  • A copy of the European Accident Statement. In Spain, this is called the Declaración Amistosa de Accidente de Automóvil

In case of an accident, the following is also required for all passengers:

  • Reflective jacket for all passengers
  • Two warning triangles

It also helps to know local laws and customs. For example, a law was recently issued banning radar detectors which tell motorists when speed cameras are coming up. Whilst the United Kingdom remains in the European Union (EU), UK holidaymakers will be able to use their driver’s license in Spain, whilst on holiday.

Why You Need To Have The Right Insurance Before Driving In Majorca

Most UK motor insurance companies will include 90 days of cover when driving in the EU. Always double check before driving never just assume. This may change after Brexit. Please check if you are covered before travelling. It is a legal requirement in Spain to have motor insurance before driving. We recommend that you take out fully comprehensive motoring insurance. Fully comprehensive motoring insurance will cover the cost of any damages you may need to pay out if you damage another vehicle in an accident, and will also cover the cost any repairs your vehicle may need. You should also take out fully comprehensive medical insurance, which will pay for any medical treatment you may need if you are injured in Spain.

Steps To Take After A Majorca Car Accident

We will now look at what to do if in a car accident in Mallorca.

If you are involved in a car accident in Mallorca, or elsewhere, the most important thing is to stay safe. Ensure that you and the other passengers are unharmed. Also, although it is a frightening situation, try to stay calm to stop the situation escalating. If you are able to, pull up to the side of the road or hard shoulder, allowing other cars to pass you. Spanish law requires you to place a red triangle 50m in front and 50m behind your vehicle in the event of an accident but only do so if it is safe to, if the traffic is too close then it is not safe. Finally, if anyone is injured, report your accident to the emergency services.

Now we will look at what to do after a car accident, in order to support any injury claim. First of all, when you speak to the driver of the other vehicle, it is very important that you don’t say something like “I’m sorry” or “that was my fault,” as that could be taken as an admission of fault. An investigation by the police or your insurance company may determine who was at fault. Similarly, If you are given any paper work to sign do not sign anything until you have legal advice. This is very important because if the document states that you accept responsibility for the incident, or that you caused the car accident you could lose your right to claim compensation for any injuries.

What to do after a car accident in Mallorca:

  • Take down the contact details of the driver of the other vehicle. If they are not the owner of the vehicle take down the contact details of the vehicle’s owner.
  • Make a note of any important details about the other vehicle involved in the accident. These should include: colour, make and registration.
  • To provide visual evidence, photograph the damage to your car and your injuries.
  • Take down the contact details of anyone who witnessed your accident.
  • Keep the invoices or receipts of any purchases you made such as the cost of taking a taxi to the hospital. You may be able to claim back your expenses as special damages, but your receipt may also be used as evidence in your case.

In Spain, you are legally obliged to report any car accident to the Police, within 24 hours. The police will create an official report, which will be used as evidence in your case. Take down the name and ID number of the police officer that you report the accident too.

  • Distress at sea and maritime rescue (called the Salvamento marítimo) – 900-202 202.

When you need non-emergency help, there are other services which you can contact:

  • 091 – Policia Nacional
  • 092 – Local police
  • 062 – Guardia Civil
  • 061 – Ambulance, emergency service
  • +34 971-202 222 – Red Cross, Ambulance
  • 085 – Fire Department on the island
  • 080 – Fire department Palma

Of course, these are numbers for emergency situations. If you experience an injury which is not serious, you can seek help at a local doctor’s surgery instead.

Medical Treatment And Healthcare For Visitors

At the time of writing, the UK is still a part of the EU. Whilst the UK remains in the European Union, UK holidaymakers can still use their EHIC card when travelling in an EU country. This enables holidaymakers to use the same state healthcare service as citizens and permanent residents of the country. However, not all countries have a state healthcare system that is as comprehensive as the NHS. AccidentClaims.co.uk highly recommends that you take out fully comprehensive health insurance before travelling. Not only will this cover the cost of any medical treatment you may need if you are injured or taken ill on holiday, it will also cover the cost of services such as repatriation, should you be seriously injured and need to return to your home country for extensive treatment.
